My Journal

We all have to start somewhere, doesn’t matter what it is we do, and every start is the beginning of a process that we can never predict. I am writing about how I started photography, the initial inspiration and encouragement by my friend George, and the on-going learning process, by just doing.

My visit to a Fairytale.....

 A visit to a Fairytale

I have just returned from the beautiful city of Tallinn, in Estonia.  I probably would never have had the opportunity was it not for my son who lives and works in this Fairytale City. This might be one of the good perks of having your son work as a ballet dancer at the Estonian National Ballet Company.  Going to a Ballet performance and a New Years’ ball was thrown into the pot as well.

Walking through the Old Town, Tallinn is like walking through a different world altogether.  The most beautiful buildings, cobblestone streets, quaint restaurants and cafés, and unusually pretty curio shops to distract and lure you inside.  A majestic Christmas tree in the middle of the square towers above the wooden stalls of the Christmas market.  The little stalls were overflowing with knitted jumpers, scarfs, gloves and socks and many more crafts and jewellery.

This could only be the life of a Fairytale.  That’s how it felt to me.  I was just waiting for windows to open and people to start singing and dancing in the streets with baskets of bread.

While looking at the view over the whole city, I thought to myself that this storybook view could only be made perfect if it had snowed.  As with many of my wishes that do come true, this wish also did.  The next day we woke up with the whole city under a blanket of snow. This added to what I saw the previous day, and it looked just breathtakingly beautiful!

So what does this have to do with styling you might think?  Well, there is a beautiful link... and nature provided this. The idea that something can look totally different with just one little change. This is where styling, when it comes to photoshoots, also plays a role.  Sometimes the same idea needs one little change to bring out the magic and to change the whole feel.  In Tallinn's Old Town it was the snow that changed the picture.  As a stylist that’s exactly how I  like to work.  It’s all about the simplicity that makes the style beautiful and unique.

I loved being in this Fairytale world for a week.  The city by the Baltic sea.  Beautiful city with beautiful people.  A great inspiration to start the new year….2107!

May all our dreams come true.
